Saint-Jean-de-Losne If you are cruising in the eastern part of France it is highly probable that your route will take you to Saint Jean de Losne, lying at the junction of the Saône river and the Canal de Bourgogne. Our town (ville) is the smallest in square meters in France, with only 36 hectares of land and 20 hectares of water, but you will find here a welcome and services that will surprise you.
The town was originally built in the 13th century when the Dukes of Burgundy bought the salt works of nearby Salins les Bains. To protect the imports of the salt into Burgundy, a castle was built and the town fortified with battlements and turrets. The salt trade was based here and the town gradually prospered and grew in importance.
Saint Jean de Losne, for many more recent years has been a bargee’s town, and has now turned towards tourism and pleasure boats to become the most important centre for inland boating activities in France with moorings for over 350 boats. You will find modern moorings with water and electricity, all technical services including drydocks and cranes, chandleries and all other shops near to the water. The local tourist office is available year round to help you get the most out of the region.
